FAQs about Sizing
Here you can find some of the common questions and answers related to sizing and measurements. If you cannot find the answer to your question here, please get in touch.
How can I make sure I order the correct size?
When it comes to measurements, precision is key. All of our measurements are in millimetres (mm). If you’ve taken measurements using a different unit, such as inches or centimetres, don’t worry. There are numerous online tools and converters available that can aid in the conversion to millimetres. If navigating these converters seems daunting, we’re here to help. Simply reach out to us, and we’ll guide you through the process, ensuring your measurements are accurately converted and ready for your order.
How precise are your doormat sizes?
We have a +/-3mm tolerance with our cut-to-size or made-to-measure traditional coir matting.
Please bear in mind that our standard sized mats may have a slight variance in size due to their natural properties and being ready-made. These factors contribute to the charm and uniqueness of the product. We advocate allowing for a +/-10mm tolerance with the standard mat sizes. However, we recognise that sometimes size is critical. In this case, we encourage you to reach out to us before placing an order so that we can personally measure our stock to find the best fit.
How big should my doormat be in relation to my door?
When it comes to maintaining the cleanliness of your home, especially the flooring, the size of your doormat plays a crucial role. In order to ensure that your doormat effectively traps dirt and debris from shoes, it’s recommended that the doormat should be at least 80% as wide as your door, or even bigger if possible. This generous sizing allows for ample coverage and better trapping of dirt, helping to keep your floors cleaner for longer periods.
What size should I be ordering if I want a mat for a mat well?
If you are considering getting a mat for a mat well, it’s important to choose the right type of matting to achieve a precise fit. Standard sized doormats are often not be the best choice as they can vary slightly in size, which could result in an ill-fitting mat for your well.
For a more accurate fit, we recommend opting for cut to size matting or hand-stitched coir matting. These options are designed to provide a precise and customised fit for your well. When ordering cut to size PVC backed coir, synthetic coir, or needle punch matting, it’s important to order the exact size of the well. It’s advisable to measure the width and length of the well in multiple areas as sizes can sometimes vary. To ensure a perfect fit, you might even consider ordering a few millimetres more than you need and then trim the mat to fit on-site.
In the case of ordering traditional backed hand-stitched coir mats, it’s important to undersize both measurements by 6mm. This slight adjustment is necessary as the traditional backing allows the mat to slightly spread with use, ensuring a good fit over time.
How thick should my doormat be?
There is no one or right answer to this question. The choice regarding doormat thickness is a decision that varies based on individual preferences and specific circumstances. One crucial factor to consider is the clearance underneath the door. It’s essential to select a doormat thinner than the clearance beneath the door to prevent the door from getting stuck on the mat and not opening smoothly.
In the case of mat wells, it’s important to ensure that the thickness matches the depth to guarantee a proper fit. When it comes to free-standing mats where there are no concerns regarding door clearance, the decision is entirely based on personal circumstances and preferences.
Can I cut the mat myself to change the size?
This depends on the type of matting you have ordered. Our PVC backed coir matting, synthetic coir matting, and needle punch matting can be cut to fit a desired shape or size with a Stanley knife. Do not attempt to cut our other types of matting as it can lead to unintended consequences, potentially causing the mat to deteriorate and fall apart.
Can you produce custom shaped/sized mats?
Sure! When it comes to providing custom sized or shaped mats, we’ve got you covered with a variety of options to choose from. If you’re interested in PVC backed coir matting, synthetic coir matting, needle punch matting, or traditional backed hand stitched coir matting, we can tailor the mat to your specific requirements.
In order for us to create a custom shape mat for you, all we need is a template of the shape you have in mind, along with the precise measurements of every side included. Simply send us an email with a sketch or diagram featuring the measurements, and let us know the type of matting you’d prefer. Don’t worry if your sketch or diagram isn’t perfect or to scale – we can work with what you provide.
Once we receive your sketch or diagram, we will guide you through the steps to place an order, or inform you if any additional information is needed to proceed.
