What is synthetic matting?
Synthetic coir matting presents a versatile and practical option for those looking for an alternative to natural coir mats. Its composition from man-made materials, including polypropylene, ensures enhanced durability and ease of maintenance, making it particularly well-suited for high-traffic areas. Additionally, the synthetic nature of the materials contributes to the non-shedding properties of the matting, addressing common concerns associated with natural coir. Furthermore, the availability of a wide range of colours and styles provides opportunities for seamless integration with diverse decor schemes, catering to the distinct preferences of different environments and design concepts.
Can I cut the synthetic matting myself?
Yes, absolutely, all of our synthetic coir matting has a gel or rubber backing meaning you can easily trim the mat to your desired size using a sharp Stanley knife or, in some cases, a good quality pair of scissors. For the best results, we recommend cutting from the backing side to achieve a clean cut and to prioritise safety.
What is the difference between woven and brush style synthetic?
Our woven style synthetic matting is designed with a focus on providing a softer finish. The intricate weaving of the synthetic fibres creates a surface with gentle loops, eliminating the presence of sharp or hard brushing bristles. This construction ensures that the mat is comfortable to walk on, even when doing so in bare feet.
On the other hand, our brush style synthetic coir has a more abrasive surface, featuring brushing bristles that offer a different experience. While this may be less comfortable for barefoot walking, the coarser texture lends itself well to heavy duty areas that require additional traction and durability. As such, it is recommended for use in dirtier spaces such as sheds or workshops, where a more rugged and resilient matting solution is needed to withstand heavy foot traffic and provide efficient brush effort.
Can I use the synthetic matting outside?
The synthetic matting, not being made from natural fibres, does not generally biodegrade. However we would not recommend this for outdoor use, particularly in areas with poor drainage. The main issue lies with the backing of the matting, as it can deteriorate when exposed to standing water or unfavourable conditions. Over time, this can lead to the matting falling apart or disintegrating.
How do I clean synthetic matting?
Regular maintenance of your doormat is essential for keeping it clean and extending its lifespan. Regardless of the type of doormat you have, implementing a regular vacuuming routine can effectively prevent dirt and debris from settling into your carpets or floor. To ensure thorough cleaning, make it a habit to vacuum the doormat every time you clean the surrounding area. An alternative method is to take the mat outdoors and gently beat it with a brush to dislodge and remove dirt particles.
In the case of heavy staining, a more intensive cleaning approach may be necessary. Washing the doormat by hand with soapy water and a sponge or brush can help eliminate stubborn stains. After washing, it’s crucial to rinse the mat thoroughly and then dry it completely on a flat surface. You can use a drying rack, a hairdryer on a low heat setting, or take advantage of the natural warmth of the sun during the warmer months to ensure thorough drying.
For particularly stubborn particles of dirt or material, a lint roller or lint cloth can be an effective tool for removal. Simply run the lint roller or cloth over the mat to dislodge and eliminate any trapped or stubborn pieces of dirt, leaving your doormat fresh and clean.
